Top 5 Must-Have Power Tools Every Beginner DIYer Should Own

There’s something exciting about stepping up your DIY game by adding power tools to your collection. Power tools don’t just make things easier; they also unlock the potential to take your basic projects up a notch. With the right tools, you can go from simple fixes to impressive builds and upgrades that have a bigger impact. That basic list of tools we discussed in the last post will always be useful, but if you’re ready to get your hands on tools with a little more oomph let’s talk about the must-have power tools that will take your DIY skills to the next level.

**When purchasing a cordless tool, be sure to look at whether or not it comes with a battery. You’ll need a battery and a charger if you don’t already have one. If you do have one already (the advantage of having other tools of the same brand) then you can save some money and purchase your new tool without a battery, usually marked as “tool only” or “bare tool”.

0.) Power Drill- Ok, why #0? The way I see it is a power drill is one of the most basic tools that is useful and necessary long before other power tools come into play. That’s why I included it in my last post discussing the most basic tools (click here to read more about that). That said, it absolutely earns it’s place on any list of must-have power tools, so I couldn’t resist giving it a little shout out!

1.) Miter Saw

Why You Need It:

A miter saw is an essential tool for making precise crosscuts and miter cuts in wood. It’s perfect for projects that require angled cuts, such as picture frames, molding, and trim work. Some people sometimes call this a “chop saw”.

Key Features to Look For:

• Adjustable miter and bevel angles

• Laser guide for precision cutting

• Safety features like blade guards and electric brakes *Most products on the market will come with these basic safety features but keep a look out for safety features if buying used items

My Tip:

Practice making cuts on scrap wood to get comfortable with adjusting the angles and handling the saw. You don’t need a saw with a lot of bells and whistles when you’re just starting out. And, as with the use of any power tool, always remember to wear safety glasses!

2.) Circular Saw

Why You Need It:

A circular saw is perfect for making straight cuts in various materials like wood, metal, and plastic. It’s ideal for tasks such as cutting lumber for a bookshelf or slicing through plywood for a DIY desk. Having this tools can eliminate the need for a large and pricey table saw in many scenarios!

Key Features to Look For:

• Adjustable cutting depth

• Bevel adjustment for angled cuts

• Lightweight and ergonomic design

• Safety features like blade guards

My Tip:

When making cuts, always clamp your material down securely and mark your cutting lines clearly. This will help you achieve precise cuts and avoid accidents. When cutting (“ripping”) sheets of plywood, consider using a sheet of rigid foam insulation underneath as a sacrificial layer- this can be used over and over, will create a stable surface for your wood and prevent damage to your blade.

Recommended Products:

What I have- great saw, but I recommend splurging for a cordless version

3.) Jigsaw

Why You Need It:

A jigsaw is great for making curved or intricate cuts in wood, plastic, and metal. It’s an excellent tool for creating custom shapes or patterns and is versatile enough for various DIY projects.

Key Features to Look For:

• Variable speed control

• Tool-free blade changes

My Tip:

Use the right blade for the material you’re cutting. Fine-toothed blades are better for smooth cuts in wood, while coarser blades work well for faster, rougher cuts in thicker materials. This is a tool that really takes some practice to make precise cuts- make some practice cuts in some scrap wood to get a feel for the speed, pressure and general handling.

4. Random Orbital Sander

Why You Need It:

A random orbital sander is essential for smoothing surfaces, removing paint, and preparing wood for finishing. Its random motion helps prevent swirl marks, resulting in a smoother finish compared to other sanders.

Key Features to Look For:

• Variable speed settings

• Easy-to-change sanding pads

• Dust collection system

My Tip:

Always start with a coarser grit to remove material quickly, then gradually move to finer grits for a smooth finish (the higher the number, the finer the grit- I often start with 80 grit, then move to 120 and 220 depending on the project). Remember to sand with the grain of the wood (which means to follow the direction of the grain lines) to avoid scratches.

Product Recommendations:

What I Use

5. Cordless Impact Driver

Why You Need It:

A cordless impact driver is similar to a power drill but designed specifically for driving screws and bolts with high torque. It’s perfect for heavy-duty fastening tasks like building decks, assembling large furniture, or installing drywall.

Key Features to Look For:

• High torque output

• Compact and lightweight design

• Quick-change hex chuck

My Tip:

Use an impact driver for tasks that require driving long screws or bolts into dense materials. While my cordless drill is sufficient for most of the projects I work on, the high torque and impact action of the impact driver make these tasks much easier compared to a standard drill.

Product Recommendation:

Before we wrap up here, I want to add some cost-saving advice. While there are definite advantages to buying brand-new tools—like warranties and the latest features— costs can add up quickly. But you don’t always have to spend a lot to get what you need. An easy way to save money when building your tool collection is by buying used tools. Many people have perfectly good tools sitting in their garage or shed that they no longer use, and they’re often willing to sell them for a fraction of the cost of buying new. One of the best ways to find great deals on used tools locally is by checking out Facebook Marketplace. It’s a goldmine for finding affordable, quality tools, and with a little patience and research, you can score some fantastic deals. Just be sure to inspect the tools before buying to ensure they’re in good working condition!

Remember, the key to mastering these tools is practice and patience. Start with small projects, follow safety guidelines, and gradually take on more complex tasks as your confidence grows.

Top 5 Must-Have Tools for the Beginner DIYer

Welcome to my very first blog post! It only makes sense to start at the very beginning so if you’re just getting started with basic home Do-It-Yourself projects, read on, my friend!

Starting your DIY journey can be both exciting but also a bit overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the world of tools and techniques. But the good news is there’s absolutely nothing wrong with not knowing the difference between a hammer and a wrench or wondering how to measure a straight line. The key is starting small and building your confidence with the basics. This guide will discuss five of the most basic tools every beginner DIYer should have, helping you take the first steps toward mastering your next project.

*Some of the links in this post are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. I only recommend products I personally use and trust, or that I’ve thoroughly researched and recommend based on product reviews or brand reputation. Your support helps me continue creating helpful content for beginner DIYers. Thank you!

1.) Tape Measure

Why You Need It:

Accurate measurements are crucial for any project, whether you’re cutting wood or making sure a picture frame is level. A good measuring tape ensures precision and helps avoid costly mistakes.

Key Features to Look For:

-Easy-to-read markings

-Locking mechanism

-Durable, retractable blade

My Tip:

Measure twice- maybe even more than twice! I can’t tell you how many times I have mismeasured (or mis-remembered what I measured). This can really set you back. Double and triple check your measurements before making any cuts or drilling holes to ensure everything fits perfectly.

Product Recommendation:

Some products can get fancy with lasers and digital readers but the most basic and affordable measuring tapes work perfectly fine!

Tape Measure

2.) Hammer

Why You Need It:

A hammer is one of the most basic yet essential tools in any DIY toolkit. It’s useful for tasks like driving nails, assembling furniture, hanging picture frames/art/mirrors, and even minor demolition work.

Key Features to Look For:

-Comfy grip

-Balanced weight

-Claw end for removing nails

My Tip:

Choose a hammer that feels comfortable in your hand. A lighter hammer is easier to control and reduces fatigue, especially for beginners. An 8 oz hammer is great for light jobs, like tapping a thin nail into sheetrock when hanging a picture frame or for a child that may be getting into using “real” tools. For most people, a 16 oz weight hammer is a good medium weight that holds up well for most jobs.

Product Recommendation:

Hammer

3.) Screwdriver Set

Why You Need It:

A good set of screwdrivers is essential for assembling and disassembling a variety of items. From tightening cabinet handles to fixing appliances, screwdrivers are a must-have.

Key Features to Look For:

-Variety of sizes and types (Phillips head, Flat head, etc)

-Magnetic tips for easy screw handling

My Tip:

While a basic screwdriver set really is all you need, a ratchet screwdriver makes life easier, allowing you to tighten and loosen in one direction when turning the screwdriver back and forth rather that in a full rotation. This is helpful to anyone but especially for those with low hand/finger dexterity.

Product Recommendation:

Basic Screwdriver Set

Ratchet Screwdriver Set

4.) Level

Why You Need It:

Ensuring your projects are level is crucial for it to work well and look good. Whether you’re hanging pictures, installing shelves, or building furniture, a level helps you achieve a professional looking result.

Key Features to Look For:

-Clear, easy to read vials

-Multiple size options

My Tip:

Use a level on both the horizontal and vertical planes (edges) to ensure everything is perfectly aligned. When the vial bubble is perfectly centered, your item should be level. If you ever purchase a product that needs to be mounted (like a TV) they’ll usually come with a small level- save those, they’ll come in handy for other projects!

Product Recommendations:

Single level (12”)

Level Set

5.) Power Drill

Why You Need It:

A power drill is arguably the most versatile power tool you can own. It’s essential for drilling holes, driving screws, and even mixing paint or grout with the right attachments. Whether you’re hanging shelves, assembling furniture, or installing fixtures, a power drill will make your life easier.

Key Features to Look For:

• Cordless design for greater flexibility

• Lithium-ion battery for longer life

• Interchangeable drill and screwdriver bits

My Tip:

Start with a basic set of drill bits and add more specialized bits as you gain experience. Practice on scrap wood to get a feel for the drill’s speed and power. Also consider investing in a drill with a built-in level and an LED light. The level helps ensure your holes are straight, and the light illuminates your workspace, making it easier to see what you’re doing.

Product Recommendation:

Drill Bit Set

Screwdriver Bit Set

Like I mentioned earlier, we’re starting at the very beginning here, so for these tools we’re talking about projects like hanging wall art, mirrors, picture frames and curtain rods, mounting a tv to the wall, swapping out a light fixture, assembling manufactured furniture, etc. Start small, take your time and you may be surprised with how many projects around your home you can tackle with these basic tools. If you’re already familiar with the items on this list and are looking to level up, check out the next post, “Top 5 Must-Have POWER Tools Every Beginner DIYer Should Own”
